The White Cube
The White Cube is a mysterious object located in the main lobby of an abandoned hotel on Lukyr Prime, encountered by Sam Lirean on multiple occasions. It appears to be the physical anchor through which Sam communicates with the entity they call "Them."
Appearance
On Sam's earlier visits, the cube appeared as something paradoxically impossible: perfectly white, like the light of a particularly bright lamp — but not blinding — and entirely without contours. Sam describes it as having no edges or surface definition, which seemed impossible. Simultaneously, the object made its surroundings darker despite its own brightness.
By Chapter 4, Sam perceives it as simply a white metal cube — perfectly clean and apparently unchanged, but ordinary in form. Whether the earlier perception was altered by Sam's connection to Them, or whether something changed about the cube itself, is unknown.
Location
The cube sits in the corner of the lobby of an abandoned hotel on Lukyr Prime. The lobby has a hole in the ceiling that continues all the way up through every floor to the building's topmost level. This hole suggests the cube arrived by crashing through the building from above, though its origin — where it came from before that — is entirely unknown.
Mara Winslett and Sam found the hotel together, years before the story begins. Sam has visited it many times alone since then, each time finding the cube unchanged. Sam has kept the cube's existence secret from Mara, at the entity's instruction.
Properties
- Creates a "connection" in Sam's mind when approached — described as "a barrier melting away"
- Enables telepathic or empathic communication with an entity Sam refers to as "Them"
- Was described as contourless and paradoxically bright on earlier visits; appeared as a plain cube in Chapter 4
- Appears "perfectly clean" despite having been in an abandoned building for an extended period
- Its surroundings become darker in its presence, even though the cube itself emits bright light
History
Sam first made contact with the entity through the cube at some unspecified point in the past. They have returned regularly to maintain the connection. The entity communicated directly enough to command Sam to protect Mara and keep the cube's existence secret. In Chapter 4, the entity ceases to respond entirely — whether this is a permanent withdrawal or a deliberate silence is not established.
Open Questions
- Where did the cube come from? What crashed through the hotel ceiling?
- Why does the cube make its surroundings darker while itself being bright?
- What is "Them"? An artificial intelligence? An alien entity? Something else?
- Why did the entity stop responding in Chapter 4?
- Why was Sam instructed to keep the cube secret from Mara?
- Did the cube's appearance genuinely change, or was Sam's earlier perception an effect of the connection?
