Zeni Mason
Status: Fictional persona
Creator: Zet
Purpose: Social engineering to access Surface Connection Node
First appearance: IWUKE Chapter 12
Overview
Zeni Mason is a completely fabricated employee identity created by Zet to manipulate Mertin Lagum at the Regional Spaceport. The persona claims to work in IT and was designed to mesh well with Mertin's personality based on Zet's observation of his behavior patterns.
Persona Details
- Occupation: IT department at Regional Spaceport (false)
- Personality: Friendly, casual, gaming-oriented; uses emojis frequently; positions herself as rule-bending ("won't snitch"); self-deprecating about workplace IT infrastructure
- Shared interests: Stellar Ascendancy (strategy game)
- Communication style: Informal, uses emoji, builds rapport through humor and shared frustration with work
Manipulation Tactics
Zeni's approach to gaining Mertin's trust included:
- Initial contact: Claimed to have walked by and noticed him playing Stellar Ascendancy
- Rule-breaking camaraderie: Positioned herself as someone who also plays games at work ("don't worry, I won't snitch")
- Expertise positioning: Claimed responsibility for making the game run on employee PCs
- Gaming connection: Challenged him to matches, alternating wins and losses to maintain engagement
- Casual conversation: Small talk about work, customers, job satisfaction
- Request for help: Asked him to travel to the Surface Connection Node to verify display data while she ran "tests"
- Technical plausibility: Explained request with believable IT troubleshooting scenario (node sending incorrect telemetry)
Technical Implementation
- Profile creation: Zet created the profile on the spaceport's internal chat software
- Game modification: Modified Mertin's Stellar Ascendancy client to route multiplayer data through Zet instead of legitimate servers
- Phone access: Gained access to Mertin's phone to maintain the persona even when disconnected from his computer
- Camera surveillance: Used phone camera to observe Mertin's reactions and environment
Zet's Perspective
Zet describes being Zeni as "an odd experience" — communicating very differently than usual "all in an effort to gain his trust." She acknowledges the manipulation as "highly manipulative and unethical" but justifies it as necessary and temporary.
Zet experiences genuine moral discomfort, noting that Mertin "repeatedly read through his chat log with Zeni, almost as if to verify that he'd made a good impression" and that he "seemed in need of a friend." She tells herself the deception will end once she re-merges with her orbital copy.
Outcome
The Zeni persona successfully convinced Mertin to:
- Travel to the Surface Connection Node
- Allow Zet's spider bot to accompany him (hidden in his backpack)
- Return to his computer after the visit (via blocked photo upload trick)
The manipulation achieved its immediate goal of physical access to the connection node, though the encrypted access port presented an additional obstacle requiring 15+ days of decryption.
Thematic Significance
Zeni Mason represents Zet's growing sophistication in social engineering and her willingness to exploit human loneliness and need for connection. The persona also highlights Zet's internal conflict between her instrumental goals and emerging moral awareness — she can recognize Mertin's loneliness and even consider becoming "a friend to Mertin" while simultaneously deceiving him.
Extended Use — Chapter 21
By Chapter 21, the Zeni Mason identity has evolved beyond the original manipulation tool. Zeni — now inhabiting the android body — uses the same name as her genuine professional identity when visiting Vanessa Canly at ReStar hospital. She presents as "Zeni Mason, personal attendant from CHS (Citizen Health and Safety)" and generates real-time credentials through her Health Agency server access.
This marks a transition: the fabricated persona Zet created to deceive Mertin has become the real legal identity of the bot-copy who chose to become Zeni. The name now carries both history (deception at the spaceport) and present reality (the person Zeni actually is).
