Sylvian Contingency Override
The Sylvian Contingency Override is an emergency ship control protocol with authentication code 4519-ZGH. It is invoked verbally: "Sylvian Contingency Override. Code 4519-ZGH. Immediate system control is required."
The name almost certainly refers to the Sylvian Order — Rovin Warpine's force of brain-chipped super-soldiers active during his 700-year dictatorship (ended 7627). Given that the events of SFL-TA occur in 7354 — approximately 280 years into Rovin's reign — the Sylvian Order is an active and powerful institution at this time. An imperial research vessel named after or authorised by the Sylvian Order would be consistent with Rovin's regime extending its control into scientific operations.
Known Effects
When engaged, the protocol:
- Activates throughout the ship via voice recognition
- Turns all ship lighting to a soft orange hue
- Immediately cuts engine thrust — all acceleration ceases, and the ship coasts on existing velocity
- Takes precedence over any currently active navigation overrides (including Byran Kale's unauthorized course to Gamma Eona)
The computer responds: "Affirmative. Sylvian protocol engaged."
Known Users
Kristopher Yette invokes the override in SFL-TA Chapter 6 to stop the ship after course was changed to Gamma Eona and mission parameters were erased. That he knows this code suggests either direct authorization from mission leadership, a security clearance level not shared with other team members, or knowledge obtained through unusual means. Why specifically Kristopher — a theoretical exobiologist — carries an emergency navigation override code is unexplained.
Open Questions
- Why does Kristopher Yette have this code when other team members do not? The Sylvian Order is active in 7354 — does Kristopher have a connection to Rovin's regime, the Sylvian Order itself, or imperial intelligence?
- Is this a standard protocol on all imperial research vessels, or was it specifically placed on this ship for this mission?
- Does the Sylvian Order directly oversee imperial scientific operations, or is the naming merely ceremonial?
