The Glowing Element

The Glowing Element is a superheavy element discovered in a mine deep underneath the surface of Lukyr Prime, far outside Prime City. Preliminary atomic designation: 114-311. Initially believed to be inert rare material, it is revealed in 7354 to be a communication device transmitting messages from approaching entity SYMMETRY.

Naming and Classification

Preliminary atomic designation: 114-311

Colloquial alias: Lyrium — the name circulating in Mera Serenol's scientific circles as of SFL-TA Chapter 5 (7354). Not yet a formal designation; usage is informal and not universal.

Permanent name: None agreed upon yet — researchers cannot reach consensus on what to call it. The Emperor promised naming rights to whoever determines its use first, but as of Chapter 5 (7354), no permanent name has been established.

Description by Tomas Lithe: "The shimmering, hue-changing light it gives off looks really weird, but mesmerizing."

Popular interest: Miryana Dorense expresses she would have loved to see it in person, calling it "beautiful" based on photos. Tomas agrees it is beautiful but warns it's "unpredictable, and up to some really weird things."

Discovery and Distribution

Location found: Mine deep underneath Prime's surface, far outside Prime City

Date of discovery: Pre-7354 (exact date not stated, but researchers have been studying it for some time by Feb 7354)

Initial classification: New type of element — superheavy element never seen before

Distribution: the Emperor split the find among over a dozen researchers, promising:

  1. Generous reward to whoever determines its use
  2. Naming rights for the element

Research competition: As of Chapter 1, nobody has found any use for it beyond aesthetics. Researchers test it extensively looking for practical applications.

Physical Properties

Appearance

Glowing: Emits light continuously

Color-shifting: Hue shifts slightly over time — not static, gentle chromatic variation

Texture: Unlike precious metals despite chemical similarities

Visual assessment: Very pretty, aesthetically striking

Chemical/Physical Behavior

Superheavy: Element with very high atomic number (beyond standard periodic table)

Reactions: Reacts almost entirely identically to precious metals in standard tests

Safety:

Standard testing: Tomas has performed many tests documented in detailed log:

Results: Behaves like precious metals. No unusual properties detected via conventional testing.

Communication Capabilities (Discovered 7354)

Method 1 — Computer File Corruption

Range: Affects computers in same room (at least several meters)

Mechanism: Unknown — corrupts computer files near it with deliberate messages

Characteristics:

First observed message (Feb 2nd 7354):

Method 2 — Direct Data Writing

Range: Affects data drives placed near it (tested at distances from direct contact to 1 meter)

Mechanism: Can write to data drives without computer connection — affects drives directly

Data format: Numbers in text form (specifically formatted as readable numbers, not binary)

Observed data (three hours exposure):
0;o=74089813920;e=0.9325143398875471;i=0°;t=26566929480;m=284.3°

These are orbital parameters describing SYMMETRY's exact position 73 minutes before Tomas checked.

Implications

Active transmitter/receiver, not inert material. Element is communication device, not naturally occurring mineral.

Long-range communication: Transmits data from SYMMETRY billions of kilometers away in real-time (or near-real-time — 73-minute lag at most).

Intelligent message construction: Can form coherent English words, properly formatted orbital parameters. Understands human language and data formats.

Intentional communication: Messages are responsive — Tomas asks it to share something (ironically), and later that day more data appears (though chronology is uncertain — corruption may have preceded his request).

Relationship to SYMMETRY

Communication link: Element serves as communication interface between SYMMETRY (approaching from 7.48 billion km away) and humans on Prime.

Synchronized messaging: Element begins communicating "Almost there" the same day SYMMETRY is 7.48 billion km from target star — arrival imminent (next week).

Position updates: Provides SYMMETRY's precise orbital parameters, updated to within 73 minutes.

Possible origins:

  1. Placed in advance: SYMMETRY or representatives placed element in mine long ago, waiting for approach
  2. Left from previous visit: Remnant of prior SYMMETRY presence in Lukyr system
  3. Part of SYMMETRY itself: Element is piece of SYMMETRY, quantum-entangled or otherwise connected
  4. Beacon/marker: Intentionally positioned for SYMMETRY to locate or communicate through

Storage and Handling (Tomas' Lab)

Container: Tempered glass box

Instrumentation: Various cables and sensors attached (monitoring for any changes or emissions)

Safety protocol: Kept in box when not actively being worked on, though verified safe to touch

Workspace: Placed on examination table when being tested, next to Tomas' desk when stored

Handling: Tomas lifts glass box carefully, places on table, opens box with button to examine material directly

Research Status (As of Chapter 2)

Seized by Guild: After Tomas reports his findings, the Royal Research Guild seizes all research materials, including the element. Tomas and his single piece are moved to the Guild lab on Prime.

Scaled deployment: The Guild lab runs multiple batches of the element simultaneously, each placed near data storage. At this scale, SYMMETRY's transmissions repeat consistently and continuously. See SYMMETRY Transmission — Approach Readout.

New message without input: While Tomas is experimenting (or on break), the message changes autonomously to acknowledge human presence — without any researcher provocation. The element is acting as a live, two-way link rather than simply responding to stimuli.

Competition status: The original competitive research project is effectively superseded — the Guild now owns the research and controls the element. Whether Tomas still wins naming rights is unclear.

Research Status (As of Chapter 1)

Competition status: Ongoing — over a dozen researchers studying their pieces simultaneously

Breakthrough: Tomas has discovered its use — communication with SYMMETRY — potentially winning him naming rights and reward

Initial step: Tomas and Alex Prane report findings: "We have to let someone know." → leads to Guild seizure and Tomas's conscription

Open Questions

  1. When was the element placed in the mine? Years ago? Centuries? Millennia?

  2. Who placed it there? SYMMETRY itself? Representatives? Automated probe?

  3. How does it communicate across billions of kilometers? Quantum entanglement? Exotic physics? Wormhole communication?

  4. Are all distributed pieces communicating? Do other researchers see same messages?

  5. What is element's atomic structure? What makes it superheavy? How is it stable?

  6. Is it artificial or natural? Created by SYMMETRY or naturally occurring material SYMMETRY can control?

  7. What will happen to it when SYMMETRY arrives? Will it activate differently? Stop glowing? Transform?

  8. Can it receive messages from humans to SYMMETRY? Or is it one-way communication?

  9. Why mine location specifically? Strategic positioning? Random? Near something else important?

  10. What will Tomas name it? If he wins naming rights, what name will he choose?
