Miran Keldt
Miran Keldt is the High Commander of the Royal Research Guild in the year 7354. He is one rank below Styvin Fring-Warpine (1st Commander of the Royal Brigade) but carries himself with noticeably less grandeur. Miran briefed the research team for the SYMMETRY intercept mission and, while not cruel or antagonistic, ultimately serves the Emperor's will — denying Tomas the chance to see his partner Alex Prane before the mission's 30-minute-notice launch.
Role
High Commander of the Royal Research Guild — the second-highest position in the imperial military/scientific hierarchy (one rank below Styvin Fring-Warpine). Despite his rank, Miran doesn't project grandeur or intimidation. He explains details, coordinates logistics, and reports to Styvin.
Appearance and Bearing
Miran received no formal announcement when entering the palace roundtable (in contrast to Styvin's grand introduction). The entire way he carries himself is noticeably less grand than Styvin's. Everyone in the room knew who he was regardless.
Age and Eternium usage unknown — no physical description provided beyond his demeanor.
Personality
Efficient and professional: Explains mission details clearly. Coordinates logistics for the SYMMETRY intercept mission. Expects questions from the scientists but doesn't demand responses.
Apologetic but firm: When denying Tomas's request to see Alex before launch, Miran puts on an apologetic expression — he understands Tomas is upset, but the decision is final. He does not treat Tomas badly, nor does he seem cruel or antagonistic.
Serves the Emperor's will: Ultimately follows orders from Rovin Warpine and Styvin Fring-Warpine. The Emperor personally requested the mission start immediately — Miran assures Tomas that "every step necessary for the mission to succeed has already been taken, or will be before launch."
Observant: Clearly notices when no one follows him initially after saying "follow me." Slows down, turns his head back to see what everyone is waiting for. Acknowledges Tomas's perceived "enthusiasm" when he jumps up to follow.
Prefers privacy for difficult conversations: Invites Tomas to follow him separately from the rest of the team, saying he wanted to talk to him personally anyway. The train ride provides the illusion of privacy (though Tomas knows it's monitored).
Story Arc — SFL-TA
Year 7354 — SYMMETRY Intercept Mission
Palace roundtable briefing (SFL-TA Chapter 3): After Styvin Fring-Warpine commanded the scientists and froze a young scientist in place for attempting to withdraw, Miran took Styvin's place at the roundtable. He explained:
- The government had known about SYMMETRY for some time
- They knew it was a controlled object — it had adjusted course to perform a gravity slingshot past Lukyr toward Lukyr Prime
- The mission is to intercept the object
The room fell silent after his briefing. He expected questions but received none. He nodded and said, "In that case, follow me."
Private train conversation: When Tomas was the only one to jump up (feigning confidence), Miran invited him to follow separately for a personal conversation.
On the train, Tomas asked when the mission would start and whether he could see Alex Prane again. Miran hesitated before responding — clearly uncomfortable. He revealed:
- The Emperor (Rovin Warpine) personally requested the mission start immediately
- They had barely 30 minutes before launch
- Tomas would not get to see Alex
When Tomas protested (expecting training, team building, anything), Miran de-escalated firmly:
"Mr. Lithe. I understand that you are upset. However, this decision is final. I can assure you that every step necessary for the mission to succeed has already been taken, or will be before launch."
Miran brought Tomas to the regional spaceport, where he received a rushed equipment introduction before boarding the ship with the four-person research team.
Relationships
Styvin Fring-Warpine — Miran's superior (one rank above); Miran reports to Styvin and carries out his directives.
Rovin Warpine — Emperor; Miran serves his will; Rovin personally requested the immediate mission launch.
Tomas Lithe — physicist conscripted for the SYMMETRY intercept mission; Miran briefed him, denied his request to see Alex, and escorted him to the spaceport. Not cruel to Tomas, but ultimately firm.
