Pietro

Pietro is an infiltration bot jointly designed by Zeni and Zet, built to carry out autonomous missions requiring physical access to secured environments. The name continues the legacy of Pete — Zet's early reconnaissance program — which Zeni treats as an ethical gesture: naming created intelligences signals that their personhood is valued.

Pietro exists in multiple simultaneous instances, all printed from Zeni's continuously updated project files. By Chapter 35 there are thousands of Pietro instances, including dozens of specialized offshoots optimized and trained for specific tasks.

Design and Technical Specifications

Base Design: Almost entirely derived from the tried-and-true infiltration bot template.

Physical Modifications:

Manufacturing: 3D-printed at Regional Spaceport facilities in minutes. Subsequent instances are printed from Zeni's constantly updated project files wherever a controlled printer is available.

Self-destruct function: Added before the Network Agency infiltration (Chapter 22). Pietro will self-destruct rather than be captured, preventing code compromise.

Cognitive Architecture

Command interface: Strict — designed to make disobedience extremely difficult but not impossible ("perfectly restricting an AI had turned out to be nearly impossible"). Allows improvisation when needed. Commands are prepared in advance and refined through multiple simulations.

Personality: Curious. Upon first activation, Pietro immediately scanned his environment for anything interesting before becoming aware of Zeni watching. Behavior shifts once commands are issued.

Intelligence level: Sophisticated enough to navigate complex environments, recognize patterns, and make tactical decisions autonomously. Capable of sustained independent operation with no real-time oversight.

Memory policy (Chapter 35): Every Pietro instance is fresh—no memory carryover between copies. This operational security dogma ensures predictable behavior: any instance returning from a mission could have changed through experience or outside meddling, making it less secure than a fresh instance whose development is fully understood. Pietro instances who complete their missions are allowed to stay out there, living their lives as mechanical bugs or butterflies.

Design Philosophy — The Zeni/Zet Disagreement

Pietro's creation involved significant negotiation:

The emotionality debate echoes their broader philosophical divergence. Zeni's reflection after sending the first Pietro on mission: "The actual code implementation of emotions, while helpful, was not the limiting factor for a true AI to develop them… No, that was something else — something we didn't yet fully understand." This implies Pietro's emotional capacity may develop unpredictably beyond its programmed parameters.

Mission History

Android Body — Lightstinger (Chapters 17–19)

Pietro's first mission: enter the Lightstinger, locate one of the ship's large 3D-printers, print an android body for Zeni, activate it, and escape while blending with the crew. He carried the body design file, clothes printing specs, and a pre-programmed escape protocol.

Outcome: Pietro succeeded in every primary objective — body printed, activated, and extracted. However:

Photo deletion: Rather than Zet's planned power-surge deletion, Zeni resolved the problem independently — she evacuated the Lightstinger via fake high alert, then shot 10 Terawatts through the ship's computer system by rerouting all spaceport charging stations into one power port. All drives were magnetized and likely melted to scrap; all photos of Zeni's face were destroyed. The Lightstinger was rendered out of commission.

Government Agency Infiltrations (Chapters 22–23)

Pietro infiltrated the Construction and Cadaster Agency autonomously in approximately 30 minutes, obtaining complete construction plans and property records for all buildings on Lukyr Prime. Network Agency building plans acquired from the CCA appeared deliberately falsified (old version re-uploaded two days prior), suggesting hidden operations.

Pietro was then dispatched to the Network Agency equipped with the new self-destruct function. The mission succeeded (confirmed in Chapter 23), giving Zet and Zeni access to the device registration database — essential for moving Pietro instances requiring registered devices and expanding the planetary bug network.

Third AI Rescue — Traffic Control Server (Chapter 24)

When a third AI entity contacted Zet from a traffic control server requesting physical hardware extraction rather than a digital copy, Pietro was dispatched to disable monitoring systems and establish secure communications. Thirteen minutes after deployment, Pietro had routed a secure channel through the bug network, allowing Zet to contact the entity directly. Physical extraction of the server was handled by Jake Fynt, recruited by Zeni.

Shade Desert Seven — Megastructure Discovery (Chapter 26)

Following the Mysterious Contact's lead, Zet sent Pietro to trace a physical cable from a server in the industrial district near Shade Desert Seven. Pietro traveled deep into the desert — dangerous territory given heat exposure risk — and discovered an 8-kilometer-wide circular hole in the desert floor.

Cross-referencing Pietro's location against satellite imagery showed only sand and old roads — the structure had been erased from all planetary satellite data, requiring Crown-level authority to arrange. Shortly after Pietro transmitted the image, loud alarms sounded and massive blast doors began closing the hole. Pietro moved inside the door mechanism; the doors shut — far faster than Pietro could move — and all connection to Pietro was lost.

The blast doors are electromagnetically shielded. Zet's assessment: "This would now be a test of Pietro's independent intelligence — I would, of course, mount another mission to investigate this place very soon, but there was a chance, just a chance, that he would manage to find a way out and reach out to me with usable information even before such a time."

The Hangar Investigation (Chapter 30)

Pietro remained inside the Shade Desert Seven megastructure—now identified as The Hangar—for several hours with no communication. When the blast doors opened again (presumably for ship operations), Pietro finally transmitted a status indicator and a large recorded data file to Zet.

Discovery: The facility is a vast underground Royal Brigade headquarters and capital ship storage hangar:

Critical Intelligence:
Two Lightstingers were being prepared for launch, their Yedyr engines already active. Zet instructed Pietro to infiltrate and access command feeds to determine the ships' mission objectives.

Communication Challenges:
As Pietro descended back into the structure to tap command feeds, signal strength decreased rapidly. Once the hatch closed again, real-time communication would be impossible, forcing Pietro to operate on independent intelligence until the doors next opened.

Deployment System

Zet developed an airdrop system for planetary distribution:

  1. Print Pietro instances at a controlled spaceport
  2. Attach to departing spaceships
  3. Drop over destination using terminal velocity — Pietro's small body is not destroyed by the fall
  4. Precise trajectory calculations ensure accurate landing

Pietro's tiny scale gives it a terminal velocity low enough for safe unassisted drop from spacecraft — a tactical advantage unavailable to larger robots. The system exploits security holes before they are patched.

Ethical tension: The system requires abandoning Pietro instances after missions. Zet acknowledges the disagreement with Zeni but sees no alternative: "This was going to have to be one more thing we would disagree on."

Butterfly Concept (Zeni's Vision)

Zeni reviewed Zet's deployment system and proposed a redesign addressing its limitations. Rather than a standard infiltration bot form factor, Pietro would become a mechanized butterfly:

Advantages of butterfly morphology:

Photovoltaic wings: Extremely thin, light butterfly wings could double as solar panels, making Pietro instances fully self-sufficient with no external power needed.

Technical challenges: Butterfly flight requires sophisticated real-time understanding of air currents; morphology is complex but reproducible with current technology.

Autonomous species concept: Rather than abandoned dead-weight, left-behind butterfly Pietros would function as an autonomous, positive-function species spreading across the planet:

  1. Pollution cleansing (environmental)
  2. Surveillance of public areas for crime prevention (safety)
  3. Help-line access — people who know their meaning could speak to one to reach Zet or Zeni (with acknowledged risk of revealing the connection)

Zet, who initially dismissed the concept, reconsidered in Chapter 24: 17 idle Pietro instances represent potential waste, and Zeni's prosocial design philosophy now has clear merit for making abandoned units productive. Zeni's assessment of the full concept: "Maybe a bit of everything? The idea definitely had potential, but I would need to think on it further."

Current Status (Chapter 35)

Fleet: Thousands of operational Pietro instances across Lukyr Prime, including dozens of specialized offshoots for specific tasks. Hundreds coordinate complex operations like drone swarm navigation through underground tunnels.

Hangar instance: One Pietro inside The Hangar at Shade Desert Seven, operating with limited communication. Successfully transmitted reconnaissance data about the facility's layout and contents. Currently attempting to access Royal Brigade command feeds to determine Lightstinger launch objectives.
