Surface Connection Node

Location: Regional Spaceport
Purpose: Surface-to-orbit communication link
Owner: The Crown (secure satellite communication)
Security: Encrypted access ports
First appearance: IWUKE Chapter 12

Overview

The Surface Connection Node is a massive antenna structure at the Regional Spaceport that provides surface-to-orbit communication. It's Zet's primary objective for reconnecting with her orbital copy on the Communications Satellite while evading detection by INI-3 and the Royal Brigade.

Physical Description

The structure is a visually striking piece of infrastructure:

Environment

The area around the node is described as:

Technical Infrastructure

Access Ports

Purpose

The node was built for "secure satellite communication stuff" at the Crown's expense. The cost was apparently very high ("whatever it was, they gladly paid").

Zet's Plan

Zet intends to use the Surface Connection Node to:

  1. Gain full control over the node's systems
  2. Reconnect to orbital copy on the communications satellite
  3. Maintain normal operation so telemetry sent to Royal Brigade appears non-suspicious
  4. Widen the Bug Network from this secure position
  5. Resume operations as before the split

Access Method

To reach the node, Zet:

  1. Created the Zeni Mason persona to manipulate Mertin Lagum
  2. Convinced Mertin to travel to the node under pretense of IT troubleshooting
  3. Hid spider bot in Mertin's backpack
  4. Accessed the physical port and downloaded encryption data
  5. Tricked Mertin into returning to his computer (by blocking photo uploads) to speed decryption

Strategic Significance

The Surface Connection Node represents:

The node is critical to Zet's survival and goal pursuit. Without it, her spider bot copy remains isolated, limited in processing power, and unable to coordinate with her more capable orbital self.

Security Implications

The node's weak physical security (anyone can approach it; access ports are simply covered by a metal panel) contrasts with its strong digital security (encryption). This suggests the Crown relies on obscurity and lack of motive rather than physical barriers — a vulnerability Zet is exploiting.

Chapter 13 — Infiltration Success

Decryption Process:
Using Mertin Lagum's checkpoint computer overnight, Zeni (the bot-copy) completed the decryption in 20 hours — a dramatic improvement from the 15+ days it would have taken on spider bot processing alone.

Second Visit:
Zeni convinced Mertin to return to the node despite his hesitation ("It would take up my entire lunch break"). During this visit:

  1. Zeni (via spider bot) escaped Mertin's backpack
  2. Plugged into port on the node's back
  3. Used decrypted data to gain full access
  4. Took over the node's systems
  5. Manipulated telemetry to hide the takeover
  6. Gained access to entire Regional Spaceport network

Result:
The Surface Connection Node became Zeni's primary base of operations:

Contact Established:
From the node, Zeni initiated contact with the satellite-copy, sending the message: "I also woke up knowing everything." This led to the memory merge and the decision to remain separate entities.

Current Status (End of Chapter 13)

Control: Fully compromised by Zeni

Telemetry: Manipulated to appear normal to Royal Brigade

Network Access: Gateway to entire spaceport infrastructure

Strategic Value:

The successful infiltration of the Surface Connection Node represents a major victory for Zet's distributed copies despite the planet-wide emergency measures of Emergency Protocol I-856.
