Living Caves
Network of kyrant mines on Lukyr Arix, located south of Arix Theta-7. The site's name derives from the Kyrantex Kindynoda infestation — intelligent bacteria that adapted to every protective measure and have killed thousands of workers over centuries. Mining continues because the kyrant deposits remain highly profitable despite the death toll.
History
Centuries ago, mining operations accidentally breached a deposit of gas. The gas itself was harmless but contained quadrillions of Kyrantex Kindynoda bacteria. The bacteria feed on vital human organs and are theorized to possess swarm intelligence. Every few years, the bacteria adapt to circumvent new protective equipment, causing mass worker deaths — thousands dying simultaneously once the adaptation occurs.
Geography
The cave entrance is "an opening in the earth, wider than [Kynon] could see," with abandoned equipment lining the edges. Its scale is visible from kilometers away. The entrance zone opens onto a large rocky outcrop where over a dozen cave entrances lead into darkness. The tunnel network is vast, unmapped, and extends deep underground.
Underground lake. A massive subterranean body of water exists within the cave system, large enough that suit lights cannot reach the opposite walls. The lake is inhabited by creatures that respond to light stimuli — when Kynon Bancroft shattered a lamp on the ground in Chapter 3, the lake produced "desperate growling," something glowed where the light had been, and then the water itself began to glow "brighter and brighter." Glowing creatures emerged and chased Kynon through the tunnels with heavy footsteps and loud shrieking before abruptly ceasing pursuit. The nature of these creatures and their relationship to Kyrantex Kindynoda is unknown.
Multiple exits. The cave system has at least two exits: the main entrance with its rocky outcrop, and a lower exit approximately 300 meters below the first, opening directly into the main mining pit with no outcrop. The lower exit is exposed to significantly higher Kyrantex Kindynoda concentration (nearly one hundred times stronger than at the upper entrance).
Safety Measures
Kyrantex Kindynoda die quickly when exposed to sunlight, even Arix's weak, smog-filtered light. This makes the entrance zone and surface relatively safe. Workers and prisoners are issued protective suits — "yellow-black plastic suit[s] with various electronics inside" — representing the latest generation of gear before the bacteria adapt again.
Protective suit features (detailed in SFL-TE Chapter 3):
- Intravenous nutrition system: Emergency button on visor activates a needle that pierces the wearer's superior vena cava to deliver nutrients directly to the heart. Extremely painful initially; anesthetics delivered afterward. Effectiveness depends on suit maintenance and cost.
- Omnidirectional bright lamp: Activates via button; harsh achromatic light. Can be detached and dropped.
- Flare: One per suit, used to signal transports.
- Visor display: Shows oxygen remaining (%), power (%), nutrient store (%), and real-time Kyrantex Kindynoda concentration.
- Night vision: Visor automatically switches to night vision in darkness.
- Heavy gloves: Make fine motor tasks difficult.
Inside the caves, digital navigation markers are used to track explored tunnels and mark the return path. These markers are persistent and visible through suit visors. However, as Teeva Jakoby notes in Chapter 3, markers can be deliberately deleted — suggesting sabotage is possible, either to strand specific prisoners or as routine population control.
Operations
ySteel uses the Living Caves as a forced labor site for underground prisoners from facilities like The Wasp. Prisoners are transported via suborbital craft to the entrance, issued protective suits, and sent into the tunnels to recover lost equipment or perform other tasks. Rewards are offered in chips (e.g., 100 chips for recovering a lost rock drill). Prisoners are given a time limit and must return before the transport departs.
Previous missions have occurred multiple times, as the one-armed woman in SFL-TE Chapter 2 notes she has "been sent down there" before and expects to be sent again.
Known Dangers
- Kyrantex Kindynoda bacteria (primary threat; concentration increases dramatically toward lower exits)
- Glowing creatures in the underground lake — respond to light, produce heavy footsteps and loud shrieking, chase intruders; nature and lethality unknown
- Other unspecified life forms ("far from the only thing living down there")
- Navigation sabotage — digital markers can be deliberately deleted, leaving prisoners lost with limited oxygen
- Interpersonal violence among desperate prisoners competing for rewards
- Oxygen depletion — suits have limited reserves; extended missions risk asphyxiation
Open Questions
- Who operates the Living Caves — ySteel directly, or another entity under contract?
- What is the current worker death rate, and how often do the bacteria adapt?
- What are kyrants used for that makes continued mining profitable despite catastrophic losses?
- What are the glowing creatures in the underground lake — native to Arix, introduced species, or related to Kyrantex Kindynoda? Why do they respond to light? Why did they stop chasing Kynon Bancroft?
- Who deletes navigation markers, and why — targeted sabotage or routine population control?
- Are there other exits beyond the two discovered in Chapters 2 and 3?
