Shade Desert Seven
A Shade Desert region on Lukyr Prime, located far to the east. The designation "Seven" suggests it is one of multiple numbered Shade Desert zones around the planet.
Geographic Context
Shade Deserts are dangerous 500km zones beneath the Shade's ground reception structures. The radiation from the orbital energy collection system creates lethal conditions in these areas, making them:
- Uninhabitable wastelands
- Sites of destroyed ancient cities from centuries ago
- Known locations for suicide attempts (as seen with Shade Desert Three)
Industrial District Connection
Shade Desert Seven is located adjacent to an industrial district containing a mysterious server that became significant in IWUKE Chapter 25. The server's proximity to the Shade Desert may be strategically relevant—areas near Shade Deserts are typically less populated due to danger, providing isolation for sensitive infrastructure.
The Mysterious Server
A network address provided by Zet's mysterious contact ("I can get you into the hangar") led to a server in the industrial district near Shade Desert Seven. The server's characteristics:
- Unusual access: Granted complete access to Pietro without much persuasion
- Communication relay: Manages encrypted/obfuscated communication protocol
- Physical connection requirement: Takes wireless messages and forwards them through a physical connection elsewhere
- Unknown destination: The receiving end of the physical connection is unidentified
Zet questions why the destination server wouldn't simply pick up the wireless signal directly, implying the destination may be:
- Underground or shielded
- In a location where wireless signals don't reach
- Requiring air-gap security (isolated from wireless networks)
- Inside the Shade Desert itself
"The Hangar"
The mysterious contact promises that investigating this lead will provide Zet with access to "the hangar" and a live news feed. The hangar's purpose and location remain unknown as of the end of Chapter 25.
Possible connections to Shade Desert Seven:
- The hangar may be located in or near the desert
- The server's physical connection may lead into the desert
- The desert's isolation provides cover for hidden facilities
Strategic Relevance
The contact's promise of a "live news feed" is particularly valuable to Zet after the Network Agency shut down the public network, leaving Zet blind to world events. The contact's knowledge that Zet needs this information suggests insider awareness of Zet's strategic position.
Comparison to Other Shade Deserts
Shade Desert Three: Previously featured as Vanessa Canly's suicide destination; described as containing "abandoned cities destroyed by the Shade centuries ago"; edge of cityscape where Health Agency coverage ends.
The existence of numbered Shade Deserts (Three, Seven) implies there are at least seven such zones around Lukyr Prime, corresponding to the eight ground reception structures mentioned in the Shade article (though one structure's desert may be unnumbered or outside inhabited areas).
Chapter 26 — The Hidden Megastructure
The Discovery
Following the Mysterious Contact's lead to investigate a server in the industrial district, Zet sends Pietro to trace the physical cable connection. Pietro discovers something extraordinary: a massive 8-kilometer-wide circular hole in the middle of Shade Desert Seven.
Impossibility:
- Zet had studied satellite imagery of entire planet
- No such structure appeared in imagery
- Cross-referencing Pietro's exact location showed only sand and old roads
- Conclusion: Satellite imagery has been falsified to hide this structure
Scale: 8km diameter—roughly the size of a small city
The Facility
Entrance:
- Loud blaring noise signals activation
- Blast doors rapidly close the hole entrance
- Pietro hurries inside the door mechanism itself to avoid being sealed out
- Doors are much faster than Pietro can move
Shielding:
After blast doors close, Zet loses all connection to Pietro:
- Facility is electromagnetically shielded
- No signals can pass through the doors
- Pietro now operates autonomously inside
Purpose: Completely unknown as of Chapter 26 end
Pietro's Autonomy Test
Current Status:
- Trapped inside shielded facility
- No communication with Zet
- Operating on independent intelligence
- May find a way out and report findings
Zet's Assessment:
"This would now be a test of Pietro's independent intelligence—I would, of course, mount another mission to investigate this place very soon, but there was a chance, just a chance, that he would manage to find a way out and reach out to me with usable information even before such a time."
The Mysterious Contact's Urgency
Immediately after Pietro enters, the contact sends another message:
"You're going to want to hurry up. I don't have much time, and neither do you."
Suggests:
- Time-sensitive operation
- Contact is in danger or under constraint
- Whatever is inside the facility is critically important
Strategic Implications
Why Hide It:
- Location is far enough into desert that no human would randomly stumble upon it
- Satellite falsification indicates high-level government operation
- Blast door activation suggests automated security response
- Shielding implies highly sensitive contents
Possible Purposes:
- Secret government research facility
- Hidden military installation
- Kyrant experimentation site
- Related to INI-Experiments or Project Chimera
- "The hangar" mentioned by mysterious contact
Cover-Up Sophistication:
Falsifying planetary satellite imagery requires:
- Crown-level authority
- Long-term systematic deception
- Access to satellite data systems
- Coordination across multiple agencies
Connection to Other Mysteries
Potential Links:
- INI-Experiments — secret kyrant human experimentation
- Project Chimera — government counter-AI project
- Abandoned Station — other secret government facility
- Eldon Wynter — shadow government figure with extreme authority
Comparison to Other Hidden Facilities
- Orbital location (easier to hide)
- Site of INI-Experiments
- INI-3 presence
- Decommissioned but still active
Shade Desert Seven Megastructure:
- Surface location (harder to hide, requires satellite falsification)
- 8km diameter (massive scale)
- Active security systems (blast doors)
- Purpose completely unknown
- Pietro trapped inside investigating
