The ruling monarch of Lukyr Prime, currently absent. His name is Covian — first referenced by Aaron Carnick in Chapter 20 and confirmed in Chapter 38. He is the father of Pyvus Warpine, the 13-year-old heir to the throne.
Known Facts
- Was historically well-liked by the population — Zet notes this in Chapter 4 when puzzling over how the Health Agency corruption could go unchecked under a popular king
- Decreed that Nutrient Pills be provided free of charge to anyone who needs them
- Left Lukyr Prime 3 years before Chapter 7 for a colony world 1.8 light-years away
- Traveled at near-light speed
- Expected back within the next year (as of Chapter 7), assuming he completed his mission quickly
- Took two-thirds of the Royal Brigade — the highest branch of the military — with him upon departure
- Left his brother Qyvin Warpine as "acting king" in his absence
Impact of Absence
The king's departure created a significant power vacuum:
- Lukyr Prime has become measurably more dangerous since he left
- The Military Police has been forced to expand into duties previously handled by civilian police
- His corrupt brother now holds power, preferring the title "Emperor"
- The remaining third of the Royal Brigade awaits the king's return
Chapter 20
Aaron Carnick references "King Covian's regency style" when comparing Qyvin Warpine's handling of courtly audiences unfavorably to the absent king — the first name-like designation for the king in the narrative.
Chapter 38 — Heir and Succession Crisis
Confirmed Name:
The king is confirmed to be named Covian when Zet reflects on succession options during the war between the Great Houses and Royal Brigade.
The Heir:
The only available heir is Pyvus Warpine, Covian's 13-year-old son. Zet considers that seating Pyvus might make the political situation worse: "He wasn't ready for the Crown—seating him might just make things worse."
With Qyvin facing a legal appeal to unseat him and full-scale war erupting, the question of succession becomes critical. If Qyvin is removed, young Pyvus would take over "until his father returned"—but Aaron Carnick worries the angry Great Houses would "just take it out on him."
