Royal Research Guild

The Royal Research Guild is an imperial scientific institution based on Lukyr Prime, operating under the direct command of Emperor Rovin Warpine. It has the authority to seize research materials of national significance and compel scientists into employment through binding work contracts.
For Tomas's conscription and work under the Guild, see Tomas.
Role and Authority
The Guild operates as the Empire's primary instrument for controlling strategically significant scientific research. When research crosses a threshold of national or imperial importance, the Guild moves immediately:
- Verification: Deploys its own science team to independently confirm findings
- Seizure: All material related to the research is seized under imperial authority
- Conscription: The original researcher is offered (in practice, compelled to accept) a work contract
The Guild scientist's language makes clear that refusal of the contract leads to "different options" being evaluated — the practical implication being that refusal is not available.
Headquarters (Lukyr Prime, 7354)
Located at the border between the educational district and the government district on Lukyr Prime.
The building complex doubles as a university for the natural sciences — most structures have a public academic character, with a few fully private buildings reserved for Guild operations. Tomas is assigned to one of these private buildings, in a prestigious lab.
Known Facilities
The SYMMETRY Research Lab (7354)
Established upon seizing Tomas's research on The Glowing Element, the lab contains:
- Computers displaying SYMMETRY approach tracking data on large screens
- Multiple batches of the Glowing Element, each placed near data storage devices
- Screens showing the text generated by Element-adjacent drives
- Enough scientists to maintain round-the-clock observation
- Station for interactivity experiments with the element
The lab confirms that when the Glowing Element is used at sufficient scale, SYMMETRY's transmissions repeat consistently. The real-time distance readouts in the lab correspond to the distance between SYMMETRY and Lukyr Prime specifically.
Personnel
Miran Keldt — High Commander
Miran Keldt is the High Commander of the Royal Research Guild in 7354. His rank is one below Styvin Fring-Warpine (1st Commander of the Royal Brigade). He briefed the SYMMETRY intercept team at the Royal Palace, explained the mission details, and denied Tomas the chance to see Alex Prane before the rushed 30-minute launch. Despite his high rank, he carries himself with less grandeur than Styvin. Not cruel, but ultimately serves the Emperor's will.
For full details, see Miran Keldt.
Guild Scientist (Chapter 2, unnamed)
A scientist wearing a dark gray lab coat who delivered Tomas's contract offer. Distinctive speech pattern: rapid and precisely enunciated, slowing only to emphasize selected words. Formal, efficient, minimal warmth. Holds tablet for all administrative tasks. Operated with clear authority but retained limited discretion — accepted Tomas's condition regarding Alex Prane on grounds of "exceptional asset" status. No signature was required for contract confirmation; a verbal acknowledgment sufficed.
Relationship to Imperial Authority
The Guild acts as a representative of Emperor Rovin Warpine in scientific matters. The scientist explicitly states he acts "under command of Emperor Rovin." The Guild's power extends to overriding private lab arrangements, personal freedom of movement, and family circumstances.
