Tom Fynt
Youngest child and only son of Jake Fynt and Laylla Fynt. Age 5 as of Chapter 27.
Personality
Age-appropriate emotional response: Unlike his older sisters, Tom's reactions during crisis are straightforward fear and confusion rather than complex processing.
Seeks maternal comfort: After the evacuation, made his way over to Laylla on the hospital bed, his presence providing her some comfort despite her severe pain.
Confused by crisis: Displayed typical young child response to incomprehensible emergency — crying, not understanding what was happening, unable to process the danger.
Chapter 27 — Emergency Evacuation
During the high-speed aerial evacuation from Royal Brigade pursuit:
Terror response:
- Crying, dissolved with tears
- Didn't understand what was happening
- Wind and noise from the open car door made it worse
- Resisted transfer to the rescue drone
Required physical intervention:
- Nina had to physically shove him into the cargo drone
- He was overpowered rather than convinced
- His resistance was fear-driven, not rational
Appropriate for age: A 5-year-old cannot be expected to understand emergency evacuation procedures, energy weapon fire, or why strangers in drones are there to help. Tom's response was age-typical terror.
Chapter 28 — Arrival at Telon
Post-trauma state:
- Had put "his head between his knees, evidently intent on blocking out the world"
- Only looked up when Laylla turned attention to him
- Remained largely non-verbal during the hangar scene
Maternal bond: After Laylla was transferred to the hospital bed and screamed from pain landing in an unfortunate position, Tom made his way over to her — his presence calming her somewhat.
Passive during discussion: While Nina interrogated Jake and Miriam asked about school narratives, Tom remained quiet — likely still processing the evacuation trauma or simply too young to formulate relevant questions.
Developmental Context
As a 5-year-old, Tom:
- Cannot fully comprehend abstract concepts like government raids or AI entities
- Processes trauma through withdrawal and seeking parental comfort
- Needs physical safety and familiar people more than explanations
- May experience delayed trauma responses as he processes the events
Family Role
Youngest vulnerability: Tom represents the most innocent family member — too young to understand any of Jake's involvement with Zet, the government's pursuit, or the political context.
Emotional anchor: His presence reminds the family of what they're protecting — pure innocence endangered by forces beyond his comprehension.
